Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed passed away in New Delhi before on Thursday at the AIIMS hospital.

Sayeed was accepted to the hospital on December 24 with complaints of temperature and neck pain. During the previous couple of days, physicians had set him after his condition deteriorated on ventilator support.

Sayeed was likewise the leader of the People’s Democratic PArty (PDP), part of the ruling coalition in Jammu and Kashmir. After reaching an alliance with the BJP he’d taken over the reins of the state on March 1.

Decks are being cleared for PDP president Mehbooba Mufti and Sayeed’s daughter, to take over the reins of the state. A suave politician, Sayeed, who has shifted political allegiances often, was as Home Minister when raised its head in the Valley activating the ill-famed exodus of Kashmiri Pandits in 1990 at the helm of internal security. He was additionally the first Muslim Home Minister in the nation. Sayeed began his electoral journey from his birth place in 1962 keeping it in 1967 and winning the seat under DNC.

In 1972, he became Congress party’s leader in the Legislative Council as well as a Cabinet Minster. In 1975 he was made president of Pradesh Congress and the leader of the Congress Legislature Party but lost the following two elections.

He joined Rajiv Gandhi’s Government as Union Minister for Tourism in 1986 at the Centre. A year after, he stepped down in protest in managing Meerut riots, mentioning the alleged complacency of the Congress party. Viewed as masterful politician, a clever political strategist and a visionary leader, Mufti’s coming on the stage and his deft management of the sensitive political equations resulted in an almost immediate change in the scenario within the State and in the regional context.
